Delightful Singer with a Penchant for Blues, Pop & Swing
A pupil of the great Claire Martin OBE, Fleur Stevenson has a voice that blends old fashioned charm with contemporary phrasing. Wether it’s singing classic Ella Fitzgerald, putting the blues into King Crimson or re harmonising legendary Elvis Presley hits, Fleur somehow makes the musical experience at her concerts a creative, rounded and cool affair. Lyrics are crisp and heartfelt and her band, featuring some of the UK’s top talent is always supportive yet adventurous. Fleur’s rhythm section for this show will include Pete Billington (piano), Paul Jefferies (bass) and Simon Price (drums).

For this special afternoon concert, Fleur is joined by Wallingford’s own Maff Potts on piano and Goring Jazz curator, excellent double bassist Howard King. Together they will present a beautifully crafted programme of swinging standards, tender ballads and timeless songs from the golden age of jazz, including favourites such as “The Nearness of You,” “Fly Me to The Moon,” “My Funny Valentine,” and “They Can’t Take That Away from Me.”Expect an uplifting and intimate afternoon of first-class straight-ahead vocal jazz in this beautiful venue, performed on its prize grand piano, with tea and coffee served beforehand.

Fleur Stevenson's tribute to Julie London on her 100th birthday. Joined by Denny Ilett and Ruth Hammond, the trio will play some of the best hits from the 1950s. The afternoon will take you back through the years with classics from Julie London such as Fly Me To The Moon, Cry Me A River, Blue Moon, I'm In The Mood For Love.

One of the UK’s most distinctive jazz vocalists, Fleur Stevenson captivates audiences with her honeyed tone, charismatic stage presence, and effortless phrasing. With warmth and subtlety, she brings each lyric to life, weaving stories with every note.
Drawing inspiration from legends like Shirley Horn and Anita O’Day, Fleur’s impeccable sense of timing, space, and improvisation honours the greats while carving out a style all her own. Her elegant interpretations of classic standards, alongside the heartfelt intimacy she brings to romantic ballads, make her one of the most compelling vocalists on the contemporary jazz scene.
Fleur has shared the stage with top musicians including Art Themen and Gareth Williams, and has performed at many of the country’s most prestigious venues from the legendary Ronnie Scott’s and the 606 Club to Soho’s iconic Pizza Express Jazz Club.
Fleur has a great voice and sense of timing, and her ability to scat is quite phenomenal For this special concert, Fleur presents an exciting programme comprising intriguing arrangements of timeless jazz classics as featured on her latest award-winning album, as well as some stunning jazz reimaginings of 70s hits by artists like Randy Crawford and Billy Joel.
She’ll be joined by an exceptional band: the multi-instrumental virtuoso Pete Billington (Jamie Cullum, Alan Barnes, Kenny Wheeler, ABC), acclaimed drummer George Double (Clare Teal, Dame Shirley Bassey, Jack Jones), and skilled bassist Malcolm Creese (Cleo Laine, George Benson Diana Ross, Rod Stewart).

The intimacy of the duo often produces music of exquisite beauty, and reveals a level of empathy between the musicians that can border on the incomprehensible. How can two people be so in tune with each other and the music, and react so intuitively in a music that is never played the same way twice? It is also a very unforgiving setting with no margin for error or hesitancy as every note, nuance and gesture is placed under the closest scrutiny with nowhere to hide.
With scant regard for the above and any inherent pitfalls in such a venture, Fleur Stevenson and Pete Billington present a set that is utterly spellbinding.
There is a fearlessness in the performances heard here that defy comparison with other versions of their chosen repertoire as the two protagonists seek to make their own personal mark on the music.
This, it should be noted, is done with great aplomb, as we are invited to listen to the delightful conversations between Fleur and Pete in their exploration of some classic songs.
Fleur imbues each song with a poignancy that enhances the lyric, whether it be a touch of melancholy, innocence, or resignation, delivering a thoughtful, fresh interpretation of the repertoire. The music is enhanced at every turn by Pete Billington's superb arrangements and multi-instrumentalism, which brings with it a splendid variety for the duo to explore whether Pete is heard on piano, guitar, double bass or even viola.
Listening to the music produced by these two wonderful musicians once again reminds us of the art of the duo, and how powerful and emotive the songs can be when handled as sensitively as they are on this album.
